Signs Your Variable Refrigerant Flow System Isn’t Working Properly
In dense communities, developers must build up instead of out. One of the challenges of building multi-story buildings is installing efficient and effective HVAC systems. Variable refrigerant flow systems date back to the early 1980s, but they have only been in use in the USA for about 15 years. If you start to notice any of these signs of trouble in your Springfield, VA home, your variable refrigerant flow system needs professional HVAC repairs.
No Heating or Cooling
If one or more of the zones in your commercial building aren’t receiving any heating or cooling despite using the correct thermostat settings, your variable refrigerant flow system needs repairs. The unit may have a dirty filter, refrigerant leak, or electrical issue stopping the refrigerant from cycling properly. The fan, coil, or compressor unit may also have an issue that requires repair.
System Stuck in Heating or Cooling
According to the Department of Energy, variable refrigerant flow systems use a reversing cycle to control which areas receive cooling and which areas receive heating. If the system is stuck in the heating mode or cooling mode for one or more zones in the building, its reversing valve or controller isn’t working properly. You’ll need a qualified service technician to troubleshoot the equipment.
Inconsistent Heating or Cooling
An advantage of variable refrigerant flow systems is their ability to maintain a consistent temperature in each climate zone. If a single zone’s temperature varies by more than one to two degrees from the thermostat setting, something may be wrong with the equipment. The outdoor unit may not be sending enough refrigerant to the particular indoor unit, which will lead to insufficient heating or cooling in that zone. The system may also have a thermostat malfunction or a problem with the unit’s fan or filter.
