Understanding Climate-Neutral Refrigerants
There’s a problem with air conditioning that’s sparking major changes. Many Alexandria, VA residents have noticed that rising temperatures have them scrambling for their AC systems more often. However, those same AC systems could be contributing to rising temperatures. It’s a tricky conundrum, but climate-neutral refrigerants may offer a way forward.
The Environmental Impact of Air Conditioning
It’s no exaggeration to say that the modern world runs on air conditioning during the summer months. Effective cooling has made hot weather far more bearable, but it’s not without consequences. Energy consumption is always a concern, but the refrigerants typically used in AC systems are also a major issue. These refrigerants, called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are potent greenhouse gases. In fact, many are over a thousand times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
The Great Refrigerant Phase-Out
To help combat the environmental impacts of air conditioning, HFCs are being phased out around the world. Many countries have pledged to rapidly cut the use of HFCs and eventually stop production entirely. Closer to home, the approach to phasing out HFCs varies by state. Even if these refrigerants remain available in the short term, however, it pays to start thinking about the future. If you need a new air conditioning system, it may be the right time to transition beyond HFC refrigerants.
Choosing a Better Alternative
Governmental organizations and experts in the HVAC industry have been evaluating climate-neutral refrigerants for years. There are several available options, but one promising refrigerant alternative is R410A, which is non-toxic and does not contribute to ozone depletion. Just a small amount of R410A under very high pressure can deliver more rapid cooling than other refrigerants. These properties make R410A-based systems highly efficient and help to lower their overall environmental impact.
We all share the environment, which means we all benefit from making more climate-friendly choices. To learn more about your refrigerant options, check out Commonwealth Cooling & Heating’s professional HVAC services or call 703-436-8028 to speak with our knowledgeable experts.
