Modern Gas Boilers Offer Up To 95% Fuel Efficiency

Many homes in Fairfax, VA and the surrounding area use a boiler for heating. When you need a boiler installation, its efficiency plays a considerable role in your monthly utility bills and your home’s energy use. Understanding boiler efficiency helps you make an informed decision about which quality HVAC products to use in your home.

Factors in Boiler Efficiency

The efficiency of a boiler depends on whether it uses steam or hot water to warm the pipes throughout your home. Steam boilers are less efficient than hot water boilers. However, the most important factor in boiler efficiency is proper installation, notes the Department of Energy. Achieving the right mix of oxygen and fuel in the combustion chamber allows the boiler to convert as much natural gas as possible into heat. A setup that allows 10% excess oxygen to enter the combustion chamber promotes an AFUE of 95% or better.

How to Determine the Efficiency of Modern Boiler Home Heating Systems

The Department of Energy rates boiler efficiency using the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) calculation. AFUE measures how much energy the unit takes in versus how much it outputs in heat. A 95% AFUE means that only 5% of the fuel is lost to combustion gases.

Features in New Boilers With 95% Fuel Efficiency

Modern boilers with at least 95% AFUE feature a second heat exchanger. This heat exchanger recovers the heat in the flue gases before the gases ventilate to the outdoors. The heat exchanger returns this heat to the water. A second important feature in highly efficient boilers is a sealed combustion chamber. The seals prevent unwanted air leaks into or out of the boiler.
